WoW Midnight Gear Upgrade Guide: Tracks, Mistcrests & Costs

Every piece of gear in WoW Midnight Season 2 sits on an upgrade track, and every step up the track costs the same currency: Mistcrests. This guide covers the five tracks and their item levels, what an upgrade costs, where each Mistcrest comes from, where to upgrade and the rules that save you crests. All numbers come from the game's own item and currency data.
The five upgrade tracks in Season 2
An item's tooltip shows its track and step, from 1/6 to 6/6. Each track has its own Mistcrest:
| Track | Item level 1/6 → 6/6 | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| Adventurer | 266 → 282 | Outdoor events, low Delves |
| Veteran | 279 → 295 | Raid Finder, Heroic dungeons |
| Champion | 292 → 308 | Normal raid, Mythic 0 (292) |
| Hero | 305 → 321 | Heroic raid, +10 end chest (311), Tier 8 Bountiful Delves (305) |
| Myth | 318 → 334 | Mythic raid, Great Vault from +10 or a Heroic clear (318) |
The Great Vault is the shortcut to a higher track: raid choices come from one difficulty above the one you clear, so a Heroic clear offers Myth 1/6 at item level 318.
What an upgrade costs
Every step from 2/6 to 6/6 costs 20 Mistcrests of the item's own track — a Hero item needs Hero Mistcrests, a Myth item Myth Mistcrests. Taking an item from 1/6 to 6/6 therefore costs 100 Mistcrests. Unlike The War Within, which used Valorstones and Crests, Midnight upgrades cost Mistcrests only.
Where to earn each Mistcrest
| Mistcrest | Earned from |
|---|---|
| Adventurer | Repeatable outdoor events, Tier 4 Delves |
| Veteran | Repeatable outdoor events, Raid Finder Venomous Abyss, Heroic dungeons, Delves Tier 5–6, Trovehunter's Bounty Tier 4–5 |
| Champion | Weekly outdoor events, Normal Venomous Abyss, Mythic dungeons, Mythic+ +2 to +3, Delves Tier 7–10, Trovehunter's Bounty Tier 6–7 |
| Hero | Heroic Venomous Abyss, Mythic+ +4 to +8, Delves Tier 11, Trovehunter's Bounty Tier 8 and up |
| Myth | Mythic Venomous Abyss, Mythic+ +9 and up |
Mistcrests have a weekly cap — your currency tab shows how much you can still earn — and once you reach the cap for one crest, content gives you the next lower crest instead, so higher content is never wasted.
Where to upgrade gear in Midnight
Upgrades are done at Cuzolth (Item Upgrades) in Silvermoon City, at around 48.5, 61.8 on the city map. Open the upgrade window, place the item in the slot, choose how many steps you want and confirm — the total Mistcrest cost is shown before you pay. Right next to Cuzolth, Vaskarn runs the Crest Exchange, where you can swap one type of Mistcrest for another.
Free upgrades and the "of the Mist" achievements
The game remembers the highest item level you have reached in each slot — your high watermark. Upgrading a different item in that slot up to your watermark costs no extra Mistcrests, so crests spent on a slot are not lost when a better drop replaces the item.
The season achievements Adventurer, Veteran, Champion and Hero of the Mist track when you have outgrown a crest: they complete when your high watermark reaches 282, 295, 308 and 321 in every slot. Myth of the Mist completes at an average item level of 331.
Mistcrests in crafting
Mistcrests also set the item level of crafted gear, based on the craft's quality: Adventurer Mistcrests 266–279, Veteran 279–292, Hero 305–318 and Myth 318–331. A crafted piece is a good way to fill the slot you never see drop.
