Venomous Abyss Nerfs: What Changed for Heroic Ula'tek & AotC

Four weeks into Season 2, Blizzard has now nerfed The Venomous Abyss twice. The first round on 1 September was small; the 15 September hotfix is the big one, touching Sszorak, Twin Fangs, The Coiled Altar and Ula'tek, with a Coiled Altar targeting fix following on 17 September. Most of the coverage lists every line for every difficulty. This post does the opposite: it looks only at what matters if you are raiding Heroic, chasing Ahead of the Curve or trying to get the last two bosses down.
What Blizzard changed on 15 September
- Sszorak: Tempest damage reduced by 20% on Heroic and Mythic; on Heroic, Caustic Claws no longer leaves Caustic Residue pools.
- Twin Fangs: Broodlings spawned reduced to 10 and Visceral Burst cast time increased by half a second on every difficulty; Corrosive Spit damage down 20% on Mythic.
- The Coiled Altar: Wail of Terror cast time raised to 12 seconds on Heroic (10 on Mythic), Venom Rupture damage down 10% on Heroic and Mythic, Mutagenic Venom down 15% everywhere, Soulcoiler spawns made predictable, 25% fewer Fragments on Mythic. On 17 September a bug that made Unnerving Fixation pick tanks too often was fixed.
- Ula'tek: Stone Venom damage reduced on every difficulty. Raid Finder got the biggest relief (one stack for missing Mother's Wrath, slower Doomscale Warden's Malice, six Blightscale Spawns); Mythic got shorter Putrid Membrane, fewer Blightscale Spawns and fewer Serpent's Call eggs.
Alongside the boss changes, three tier-set bugs were fixed (Protection Paladin Consecration, Holy Priest Renewed Vigor stacks, Elemental Shaman free Maelstrom spending) and players who were behind on Spark of Tides received the missing sparks in their bags.
Heroic: Coiled Altar and Ula'tek after the nerfs
Read the list again with only Heroic in mind and it shrinks. The Coiled Altar is the boss that actually got easier: two extra seconds on Wail of Terror is the difference between a raid that reacts and a raid that dies to it, and the Unnerving Fixation fix means the tanks stop eating a mechanic meant for the group. Ula'tek on Heroic received exactly one direct change, lower Stone Venom damage. Everything that wipes a Heroic pug at boss eight, the platform movement in phase two, the add timing and the healing check while the raid is spread, is untouched. Icy Veins called Ula'tek the hardest Heroic end boss in a long time during the race, and after the hotfix that is still a fair description.
Why Ula'tek still ends pug raids
Numbers tuning helps groups that are already doing the mechanics and failing the DPS or healing check. It does nothing for a group that loses three players to the first platform transition. That is why the same week that brought the nerfs also brought the usual pattern in Group Finder: full clears to boss six, then "Ula'tek, know tactics, 5 more" listings that fill slowly and disband after two pulls. If your guild is not raiding Heroic every week, the practical problem is not the tuning, it is reaching Ula'tek with fifteen people who have seen the fight before.
Ahead of the Curve: is it easier now?
A little, and not where most people expect. Ahead of the Curve: Ula'tek still requires a Heroic kill before Season 2 ends, and with Season 3 announced for early 2027 there is time. The kill is slightly more forgiving because Stone Venom hurts less, but the achievement is gated by the same thing as before: getting a competent raid to boss eight in one lockout. Patch 12.1.5 will add the one-boss Kith'ix raid with its own achievement; it does not replace the Venomous Abyss one, so the AotC window is Season 2 only.
The fastest way to the last two bosses

What comes next
Two dates matter in the next fortnight. The 22 September reset (23 September in Europe) brings the final Season 2 trinket tuning, covered in our trinket guide; the 17 September hotfix already reduced Font of Venomous Rage by 50% in PvP only, so it stays a top raid trinket. Then patch 12.1.5, currently on the PTR and expected in early October, adds the Kith'ix raid, Labyrinths and Ascendant Venomstones for upgrading Season 2 weapons and trinkets, which is one more reason to have Ula'tek's loot before it arrives.
