Season 1 Trinket Nerfs on 22 Sept: Season 2 Replacements

Blizzard has announced what it calls the final round of trinket tuning for Midnight Season 2. With the weekly reset on 22 September (23 September on EU realms) three Season 1 trinkets that many players still carry get nerfed, and five Season 2 healer trinkets get buffed. If one of the nerfed trinkets is in your bags, this is the week to plan its replacement.

What changes on 22 September

Nerfed (Season 1 items):

  • Gaze of the Alnseer — primary stat reduced by 10%. Drops from Chimaerus in The Dreamrift (Season 1 raid).
  • Vaelgor's Final Stare — mastery reduced by 10%. Drops from Vaelgor & Ezzorak in The Voidspire (Season 1 raid).
  • Algeth'ar Puzzle Box — mastery reduced by 25%. Drops from Echo of Doragosa in Algeth'ar Academy (Season 1 Mythic+ pool).

Buffed (Season 2 items):

  • Preternatural Antivenom — healing increased by 75%. The Twin Fangs, Venomous Abyss.
  • Seed of Radiant Hope — cooldown 1.5 min → 1 min, healing +40%. The Blinding Vale.
  • Mycolic Medicine — effect frequency +33%, healing +58%. Den of Nalorakk.
  • Unstable Felheart Crystal — cooldown 2 min → 1.5 min, healing +58%. Murder Row.
  • Ruby Whelp Shell — reworked: all effects twice as frequent, single-target healing +37%, multi-target healing +5%, damage −42%, stat effects −50%. Ruby Life Pools.

Why Blizzard is doing it

The developer note is unusually direct: several Season 1 trinkets "remain more desirable than desired due to a combination of aggressive initial tuning and lack of direct Season 2 trinket competition". The pass is meant to give single-target healing trinkets a real niche and to push the last holdouts onto Season 2 gear. Blizzard also says players "can expect this to be the final round of raid and dungeon trinket adjustments for Season 2", so whatever you farm after the reset is safe to commit to.

DPS: what replaces Gaze, Vaelgor's Stare and the Puzzle Box

All three nerfed trinkets are stat sticks, and Season 2 has direct successors at the back of Venomous Abyss, which is where the highest item level trinkets in the raid drop:

  • Hex Lord's Dooming Idol — The Coiled Altar (boss 7), haste-based with a passive and an on-use component.
  • Font of Venomous Rage — Ula'tek (boss 8), mastery-focused on-use.
  • Voracious Heart of Ula'tek — Ula'tek (boss 8), critical strike oriented.
  • Vile Vial of Volatile Venom — Altar of Fangs, the Season 2 Mythic+ dungeon, flexible stat allocation on use.

Which one is best for you depends on your spec; check your class guide or sim before you commit a loot priority. The item level argument, however, is spec-independent: a Season 1 raid trinket tops out at 276 on Mythic, while Venomous Abyss trinkets drop at 292-302 on Normal, 305-315 on Heroic and 318-344 on Mythic. After a 10-25% stat cut on top of that gap, very few setups keep the old trinket.

Healers: five buffed trinkets and where they drop

If you heal, the reset works in your favour. Preternatural Antivenom comes from The Twin Fangs in Venomous Abyss; the other four are Mythic+ drops from The Blinding Vale, Den of Nalorakk, Murder Row and Ruby Life Pools, all in the Season 2 dungeon pool. A 40-75% healing increase turns several of them from filler into first picks, and the Ruby Whelp Shell rework makes it a genuine single-target healing option instead of a damage trinket.

The fastest way to get them before the reset

The nerf lands in seven days, and the replacements sit on the last three raid bosses and in four specific dungeons. Two ways to close the gap this week:

  • Raid trinkets: a Venomous Abyss carry with a loot priority option covers The Twin Fangs, The Coiled Altar and Ula'tek in one run. Heroic gives 305-315 trinkets and a Myth-track Vault slot; Mythic goes up to 344. The Tide & Venom bundle adds Tidebound Grotto for the rest of your slots.
  • Dungeon trinkets: Mythic+ keys in the dungeon you need — Altar of Fangs for Vile Vial, Blinding Vale, Nalorakk, Murder Row or Ruby Life Pools for the healer trinkets. Timed +10s also place a Myth-track item in your Great Vault.

Every run is self-play: you stay on your own character in your own group with our EU team, and everything that drops for you is yours. Most orders are booked into the next scheduled run, usually the same day.

Do you have to replace them right away?

Not on the day, but soon. A 10% primary-stat or mastery cut is noticeable rather than crippling; the 25% cut on the Puzzle Box is bigger. What decides it is the item level gap plus Blizzard's statement that no further tuning is coming: the Season 2 trinket you farm now will still be the right one at the end of the season. If you are also behind on item level, our Season 2 gearing guide covers the full weekly order, and the raid and Mythic+ pages list every option.
