Omnium Folio Guide: Unlock, Best Runes and 12.1.7 Changes

The Omnium Folio is the account-wide player power system Blizzard added in patch 12.0.7. It gives every character a small tree of runes that add damage or healing to your normal rotation, works in PvE and PvP, and stays for the rest of Midnight. With patch 12.1.7 it grows: two more Motes and two new runes. This guide covers the unlock, the weekly upgrades, every rune and which ones to pick.
What is the Omnium Folio?
It is a five-row tree that you open from the Omnium icon on your minimap. Row 1 is your Core Rune, which adds extra damage or healing to your spells; the other rows strengthen it. You pick one rune per row and can change them at any time outside of combat, so switching spec or content costs nothing. Each row is unlocked with a Mote of Omnial Inquiry (Blizzard's overview).
How to unlock the Omnium Folio
- Start: the quest The Magisters' Call from the Magister's Missive near the vendors in Silvermoon's bazaar.
- Questline: help Magister Umbric and Grand Magister Rommath restore the Sunstrider Omnium in the Magisters' Terrace on the Isle of Quel'Danas (the open area, not the dungeon).
- Unlock: the final quest The Omnium Reawakens unlocks the Folio and the achievement The Sunstrider Omnium. Afterwards portals at Thalassian University and the bazaar take you back to the Omnium.
Motes and the weekly Seeking Knowledge quests
Every row costs one Mote, and you get one Mote per weekly Seeking Knowledge quest from Magister Umbric in the Lycaneum, five in total. The objectives send you to Midnight content you probably already do: Ritual Sites, Void Assaults, a final dungeon, Delve or Raid Finder boss, and the zones of Val and Naigtal. Five Motes complete the achievement Omnium Folio Studies, which rewards the Sunstrider Omnium Simulacrum decor.
Alts: since a June hotfix the weekly progress from week two counts for your whole account, so an alt does not start a new five-week countdown. Each character still has to do the unlock questline once.
Every rune, row by row
| Row | Rune | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Core | Rune of Void-Touched Orbs | Every 10 sec you attract a Void-Touched Orb, up to 5; damage sends them at the enemy, healing sends them to the most injured ally. |
| 1 · Core | Rune of Unleashed Fire | Your spells and abilities have a very high chance to deal Fire damage to an enemy or heal the most injured nearby ally. |
| 2 · Defensive | Rune of Self-Mending | Your Core Rune also heals you while you are below 75% health. |
| 2 · Defensive | Rune of Void-Tainted Shell | A hit for more than 10% of your health gives a shield for 10 sec that also damages you over time; once every 30 sec. |
| 2 · Defensive | Rune of Lynxlike Reflexes | Taking damage gives Speed for 10 sec; once every 30 sec. |
| 3 · Lingering | Rune of Lingering | Your Core Rune adds damage or healing over 8 sec and prefers targets without it. |
| 4 · Stat | Rune of Critical Power, Rune of Burning Haste, Rune of Masterful Cunning, Rune of the Versatile Warrior | Your Core Rune gives Critical Strike, Haste, Mastery or Versatility for 10 sec; stacks can overlap. |
| 5 · Capstone | Rune of Overload | Core Rune damage and healing +100%. |
| 5 · Capstone | Rune of Residual Energy | Rune of Lingering damage and healing +100%. |
| 5 · Capstone | Rune of Echoes | A 10-sec curse stores 50% of your Core and Lingering Rune output and releases it at the end. |

Which runes should you pick?
- Core Rune: the guides disagree. In Method's testing Unleashed Fire was slightly ahead for most specs with high uptime, while Void-Touched Orbs was better for pet specs, healers and fights with long downtime. Most other guides call Orbs the safer default because it builds up steadily. If you play a healer, a pet spec or a lot of open world, take Orbs; for a high-uptime DPS spec, try Unleashed Fire.
- Row 2: purely defensive. Void-Tainted Shell for raids and dungeons, Lynxlike Reflexes if you mostly do solo content and want speed.
- Row 3: Rune of Lingering is the only option.
- Row 4: take the secondary stat your spec values most; a sim of your character gives the exact answer.
- Row 5: in Method's testing Overload was best in most situations; Echoes was strong in dungeons with constant pulls but weak with downtime, and Residual Energy can suit damage-over-time specs.
Because runes can be swapped outside combat for free, set them per activity: one build for raid, one for Mythic+ and one for open world.
What patch 12.1.7 adds
According to Blizzard's 12.1.7 PTR notes, players can earn two additional Motes, and two runes are added:
- Rune of Empowerment: your row-4 stat rune (Critical Power, Burning Haste, Masterful Cunning or Versatile Warrior) gives 20% more of its stat.
- Rune of Critical Mass: when your Core Rune deals damage or healing, it has a chance for an extra effect: with Void-Touched Orbs, three orbs that damage enemies or heal allies within 5 yards; with Unleashed Fire, a blast that splits Fire damage or healing within 10 yards.
Blizzard has not yet said how the two new Motes are earned, and the patch is still on the PTR, so values can change. The release date is not announced either; our 12.1.7 guide has the current state. Finish your five weekly upgrades now so the new runes are the only step left when the patch arrives.
Put the extra power to use
The Folio adds power on top of your gear, so it pays off most in content where every percent counts: timed Mythic+ keys and Heroic raid bosses. If you want those runs without the group search, our EU team plays with you on your own character, self-play: Mythic+ keys for timed runs and Venomstones, or the All 3 Raids bundle for Heroic clears with Ahead of the Curve.
