WoW 12.1.7 Release Date, Talebound and What Changes

Patch 12.1.7, Echoes of the Worldcore, is the next Midnight content update. It has been on the public test realm (PTR) since 15 October and brings Talebound, a new PvE action RPG game mode, a story chapter in Dornogal and new Lorewalking quests. Here is what Blizzard has confirmed, what is still PTR data that can change, and what to finish before the patch arrives.
When is the 12.1.7 release date?
Blizzard has not announced a release date for 12.1.7 yet. The PTR opened with Blizzard's development notes on 15 October, and the Talebound demo ran on the PTR from 30 October to 1 November. We will add the date and the European release time here on the day Blizzard announces it.
Talebound: the new game mode
Talebound is a PvE action RPG mode in which a mysterious Storyteller pulls you into his tales. You can play it solo or with friends, and you earn Bound Silver for cosmetic rewards. The demo showed (Blizzard's demo article):
- Three classes: Slayer, Inquisitor and Witch. Every class can double jump, dodge and guard, so positioning matters more than in normal WoW combat.
- Three tales: Darkhaven, Greenthistle Wood and Greywake's Expedition, after the Red Hollow introduction.
- Three difficulties: Normal, Veteran and Heroic.
Blizzard notes that several Talebound talents are still in progress and that tuning is ongoing.
Talebound rewards on the PTR
Wowhead found player-power rewards in the PTR data: Ascendant Venomstones, bonus rolls and experience potions (Wowhead). Two Talebound achievements first awarded Mythic Venomous Abyss gear; in the 5 November PTR build that reward was replaced with open-world gear. Cosmetics include a new hearthstone and a toy that lets companion pets fly on an enchanted book. All of this is PTR data and can still change before release.
Story, Lorewalking and the Omnium Folio
- Campaign, "The Return to Dornogal": Xal'atath has breached the Worldcore, and the only way in is the damaged Coreway in Dornogal, where you help Arator, Brinthe, Dagran and Brann. Wowhead describes the chapter as the prologue to patch 12.2.
- Lorewalking: Apprentice Lorewalker Li Li Stormstout offers four new storylines for characters level 10 and above, about Jaina, Thrall, the Titans and Tyr. You can repeat them as often as you like.
- Omnium Folio: two more Motes of Omnial Inquiry to earn and two new runes, the Rune of Empowerment (your stat rune grants 20% more) and the Rune of Critical Mass.
What leaves with 12.1.7: Aqir Invasions
According to the PTR data reported by Wowhead and Icy Veins, Aqir Invasions end with 12.1.7 (Wowhead). Their achievements, including the Bane of the Swarm title (Exalted with the Aqir Research Enclave), can then no longer be completed. Estelia Archtender keeps selling the rewards without a reputation requirement, but for more Voidlight Marl. Blizzard has not confirmed this yet, so treat it as the PTR state.

What to do before 12.1.7 arrives
- Aqir achievements and reputation: finish them while the invasions are still running; our Aqir Invasions guide shows the fastest way to Exalted, the missing scenarios and the rewards.
- Venomstones and gear: Talebound adds another source, but the stones already drop from Heroic and Mythic raid bosses, +10 Mythic+ keys and Tier 11 Delve bonus chests, and every week you collect now counts (Venomstones guide).
- Alts: the 30% experience potions found on the PTR will help later, but alts that should take part in Season 2 need to reach level 90 first (leveling guide).
